This position requires the ability to follow the daily operational tasks and schedule of events of the special needs Day Camp. Therapeutic Counselors must engage campers, be a self-starter, be dependable, initiate activities, and support all areas of the Day Camp experience.
Position Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
& Follow all Indy Parks and Recreation Seasonal Policies and Procedures.
& Follow the directions given by the Head Counselor and is flexible with responsibilities in the Day Camp.
& Assist with the implementation of the daily schedule and events of the day.
& Be resourceful, self-directed, willing to swim daily, and support (hand over hand, if necessary) to be successful in all camp activities of the day.
Qualifications
& Be at least 18 years of age and have minimal experience working with children with special needs and behavior disorders in a supportive and/or structured environment.
& Enrolled in High School or have High School Diploma or equivalent. College or some College is preferred.
& Have a current certification in CPR and First Aid prior to summer employment.
& Must be able to floor activities with campers.
& Be able to assist lifting campers in and out of wheelchairs 30 to 80 lbs.
& Is willing to change diapers of campers 6 to 21 years old.
& Knows how to or is willing to learn how to do a G-tube feeding to campers.
& Demonstrates good communication, organizational and leadership qualities.
& Has to work all the weeks of the Day Camp
& Commit to attending all Day Camp Trainings and must be willing to start by June 1st.
& Has to be flexible and able to work daytime hours ranging from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
& Prefer any bilingual skills, particularly Spanish
Working Conditions
Follows the established policies and procedures of the department. Adheres to all rules and regulations. Independent judgement may occur in decisions regarding day camp programs, activities, handling discipline problems, emergency situations and dealing with the public.
